John Maessner

Director of Youth Development

John Maessner was named Director of Youth Development in January of 2007, having already cemented his place in D.C. United history after being a part of the1996 U.S. Open Cup Championship team and the1996, 1997 and 1999 MLS Cup winning teams as a player. In his three seasons as a midfielder with the Black-and-Red, Maessner scored seven goals and recorded 15 assists. John also spent 1998 and part of the1999 season with the Miami Fusion before coming back to D.C. to help win the 1999 MLS Cup. He then went on to play for the Tampa Bay Mutiny for the 2000 and 2001 seasons where he finished his playing career.

Prior to joining MLS, he played for F.C. Saarbrucken of Germany, F.C. Istres and La Ciotat of France as well as the Ft. Lauderdale Strikers and Miami Freedom of the APSL (now known as USL). Maessner also had short stints with the Connecticut Wolves (USISL), Buffalo Blizzard (MISL) and Harrisburg Heat (MISL). John started in the 1994 FIFA World All Star game in Casablanca, Morocco in front of 100,000 fans scoring the final goal in a 3-3 draw. He earned his degree from the University of Virginia in 1992 and won a National Championship under Bruce Arena in 1989. John has experience with U.S. senior and youth national teams, participated in the World University Games in Sheffield, England in 1991 and was named as a Parade High School All American in 1987.

After his playing career, John returned to the University of Virginia to join the coaching staff and became the Development Director for the Soccer Organization of Charlottesville/Albemarle. John has extensive experience with various camps, clinics and youth teams across the country and holds his USSF "B" and National Youth Licenses. John is married to his wife Christine and has two lovely children, Daisy and Miko.
