MLS Experience

2008: Marcelo Gallardo made history when he signed with D.C. United on 1/29 to become the club's first Designated Player. Playing in the heart of midfield, Gallardo scored four goals and recorded three assists in League play though injuries limited him to just 15 league games (14 starts). The midfielder was initially sidelined for two months over the summer because of a sports hernia that required surgery but was ruled out for a further month due to a strained adductor muscle. During his comeback against Chivas USA (10/4), he suffered a knee injury and was forced to miss the remainder of the season. In all competitions, Gallardo played in 20 games (19 starts), tallying four goals and four assists.

Other Professional Experience

2007: Played with French club Paris-Saint Germain. He made his club debut on 1/7/07 in a 3-0 victory over Nimes, making a total 22 appearances with two goals during his lone season PSG.

2003-2006: Made a return to River Plate, the team began his professional career with in 1992. During his three seasons in Buenos Aires, Gallardo appeared in 77 games and collected 25 goals. In 2004, the crafty midfielder helped River Plate win the Clausura.

1999-2003: Gallardo moved overseas to play with Monaco in French Ligue 1. In his first season with the club, Gallardo made 28 appearances and collected eight goals, serving as a dominant force in the midfield for Monaco. In 2000, Gallardo's second season with Monaco, he helped the team win the French Ligue 1 championship and the Trophee Des Champions (Champions Trophy). For his efforts that year, Gallardo was named French League Footballer of the Year. He was again the driving force in 2003 when Monaco captured French League Cup. After five years with Monaco, Gallardo made 102 total appearances and tallied 18 goals.

1992-1999: Gallardo began his professional career with River Plate in Argentina. In his seven years with the famed club, Gallardo made 109 appearances and notched 17 goals, helping River Plate to three Apertura championships (1993, 1994 and 1996), one Clausura title (1997) and the coveted Copa Libertadores cup (1996).

International

1994-2002: Gallardo made his international debut with Argentina in a game against Chile in 1994. In 1996, he was a member of the Argentine Olympic team that captured a silver medal in Atlanta. In 1997, he helped the Argentine U-20 National Team win the FIFA U-20 World Cup. He went on to represent the Argentine National Team at both the 1998 and 2002 World Cups. With the senior Argentine National Team, Gallardo has earned a total 44 caps and contributed 14 goals.
