Quakes rally past Revolution
Twellman slipped home a 49th-minute goal for his first of the season to break the scoreless tie, but a stunning overhead kick from DeRosario leveled terms in the 53rd minute for the Quakes first goal of the season, then two minutes later Alvarez finished off a Landon Donovan cross to give San Jose the lead.

Both teams nearly opened the scoring in the opening minutes. Revolution playmaker Jose Carlos Cancela lashed a freekick over the wall from 25 yards, Onstad just tipping it over as it was heading into the upper corner. The Quakes raced to the other end and Donovan and DeRosario played give-and-go, Donovan collecting the return pass and racing in alone on Revs 'keeper Adin Brown, only to see his rolling shot bounce off the base of Brown's right-hand post.
Pat Noonan gave the Quakes a torrid time on the left flank in the first half, and twice saw good chances denied, the second when Onstad stood tall to block an angled drive from close range.
The home side took the lead after the break on a goal that had the San Jose defenders appealing in vain for offside. Steve Ralston sent in a cross and both Joe-Max Moore and Twellman were behind the Quakes back four. Moore flicked the ball past Onstad with a deft little touch and Twellman had little to do but tap it into the empty net.
But San Jose drew level through some DeRosario magic. A corner came in from the right, and Brown and Quakes defender Eddie Robinson challenged for it, the rebound popping up where DeRosario sent it goalward with an overhead volley.
Then two minutes later Donovan collected a pass on the right flank and sent a measured cross to the far post where Alvarez streaked in completely unmarked, the substitute side-footing the ball home after he had come on for Brian Mullan to start the second half.
Onstad was again called upon as the Revolution put San Jose on its heels for long stretches looking for an equalizer. He was forced to tip a header from his own defender over the bar, then made two remarkable saves on Twellman when the two were face-to-face in the box, first denying a header then parrying the rebound when he was on the ground.
Ching finished off the match in the 75th minute when Donovan slipped a terrific through ball in the middle, the Quakes forward hitting a first-time shot from the edge of the area. It was his first goal since suffering a Achilles injury in New England last year which ended his season prematurely.
It was the first victory of the season for San Jose after a loss and a draw. The Quakes stay on the road next Saturday with a match against the Colorado Rapids in Denver (7 p.m. MT). The Revolution have started their 2004 season with a pair of losses, and they too travel next weekend to play the MetroStars at Giants Stadium on Sunday afternoon on ESPN2 (4 p.m. ET).
